Fire TV Stick 4K Select vs 4K Max: Vega OS or Fire OS, Which Should You Buy in 2026?

Posted 10/31/26 by the AdamApps Team

If you are shopping for a Fire TV Stick right now, the most important spec is not printed on the front of the box: which operating system it runs. The Fire TV Stick 4K Select runs Vega OS, Amazon's new Linux-based system, and the Fire TV Stick 4K Max runs Fire OS, the Android-based system every Fire TV used for a decade. Both are good sticks, and which one fits depends on the apps you use, which is what this guide sorts out, from a team that builds a Fire TV app and has watched both systems up close. One thing you do not have to worry about: our own app, MarketCast, works on both.

There is a twist if you searched for the 4K Select: Amazon has already discontinued it. On September 30, 2026 Amazon announced a 3rd gen Fire TV Stick 4K that replaces both the 4K Select and the Android-based Fire TV Stick 4K Plus, and the new stick runs Vega OS too. So the real choice in 2026 is Vega or Fire OS. For the background on why Amazon is doing this, read what Vega OS means for your Fire TV apps; this page is the buying guide.

Which Fire TV Sticks run Vega OS and which run Fire OS?

Starting with the 4K Select, every new Fire TV Stick runs Vega OS. The lineup at the end of October 2026:

  • Vega OS: Fire TV Stick 4K Select (2025, now discontinued), Fire TV Stick HD (2026), Fire TV Stick 4K 3rd gen (2026).
  • Fire OS: Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd gen, 2023), Fire TV Cube (3rd gen, 2022), the Fire TV Stick 4K Plus while stores still have it, every older Fire TV Stick, and TVs with Fire TV built in.

Watch for two naming traps. The 2026 Fire TV Stick HD has the same name as the older Android-based Fire TV Stick HD, so check the year. And the plain "Fire TV Stick 4K" is now a Vega stick, while the Android-based 2023 stick that used to carry that name was renamed the Fire TV Stick 4K Plus in October 2025. Once the 4K Plus sells out, the 4K Max is the only Android-based stick Amazon sells.

Specs are from Amazon's developer pages. The 2026 Fire TV Stick HD is the 1080p version of the same Vega platform: 1 GB of memory, 8 GB of storage and Wi-Fi 6, at $34.99 when it launched in April 2026. On the Fire OS side, the Fire TV Cube (3rd gen) has an eight-core processor, 2 GB of memory, 16 GB of storage, Wi-Fi 6E and an Ethernet port. The 3rd gen 4K does add a redesigned remote and official support for power from the TV's USB port.

What you give up on Vega OS: apps, sideloading, Kodi

Apps. Android apps do not run on Vega. Every app has to be rebuilt for it, or reach it through Amazon's cloud program (more on that below). When AFTVnews crawled Amazon's catalog in October 2025, right after the 4K Select launched, Vega had 53 of the top 100 featured Fire TV apps, against 99 on Android-based Fire TVs. Even in the Movies and TV category it had 69 of the top 100. The catalog has grown since, but check your apps first. The big services are there: Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+ and YouTube all run on Vega. What goes missing is more often a local news app, a regional sports app or a niche player.

Sideloading. None. Vega installs apps from the Amazon Appstore only: no Downloader, no Kodi, no APK files. If anyone in your house sideloads anything, that settles it: buy the 4K Max.

Media player features. Plex exists on Vega, but reviewers found it missing much of what the Android version does. Vega sticks will not use a USB drive for extra storage or media. At launch the Vega store had no VPN apps and no games. NordVPN and IPVanish arrived after a later Vega update and Surfshark followed, so if you use a VPN, check that yours is one of them.

Picture and sound. No Vega stick so far supports Dolby Vision, only HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG, so a Dolby Vision TV gets more out of the 4K Max. Vega sticks also pass Dolby audio through to your TV or soundbar instead of handling it themselves.

What is a cloud-hosted app on Fire TV?

To fill the gaps, Amazon runs some Android apps in its data centers and streams their screens to Vega sticks as video, labeled on the Appstore as Amazon cloud-hosted apps. They work, but every button press makes a round trip over your internet connection, and they open slower. In tests published by Witbe, a video QA company, a cloud-hosted app took about 12 seconds to launch on the 4K Select, against about 4 seconds for the same app running natively on the 2023 Fire TV Stick 4K. Once video is playing, the difference mostly disappears, because the player runs on the stick.

The program is invite-only and Amazon picks the apps, so for any app you care about, check its Appstore listing for your exact stick before you buy.

Is the Vega Fire TV Stick faster than the 4K Max?

Vega is lean, which is how it gets by on 1 GB of memory, but independent testing does not show a Vega stick beating the Android ones. Witbe concluded the 4K Select was not faster than the two-year-old Fire TV Stick 4K. AFTVnews found scrolling on the 4K Select noticeably slower than on other Fire TVs. For the new 3rd gen 4K, Amazon claims it gets you to content 20 to 40 percent faster than a similarly priced 4K stick from another leading brand, but offered no comparison with the 4K Select it replaces, whose processor it nearly matches. Its first weeks were bumpy too: AFTVnews reported a Vega OS 2.0 bug that showed installed apps with the same generic gray icon.

From our side of the screen, memory matters more than the 4K label for anything you leave running. In our years building for Fire TV, the 2 GB sticks hold up through long sessions and app switching, while 1 GB ones reload more. Vega's lighter system narrows that gap. It does not turn 1 GB into 2.

Fire TV Stick prices: 4K Select vs 4K Max vs the new 4K

Launch list prices: the Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd gen) was $59.99 in September 2023, the 4K Select $39.99 in September 2025, the Fire TV Stick HD (2026) $34.99 in April 2026, and the 3rd gen Fire TV Stick 4K $59.99 on September 30, 2026. Amazon discounts all of them often, so compare the day's prices. The point that matters: the new Vega 4K launched at the same list price as the 4K Max. At equal money, the 4K Max gives you twice the memory, twice the storage, Wi-Fi 6E, Dolby Vision and every Fire TV app. A Vega stick earns its place only when it is clearly cheaper that day.

Which Fire TV Stick should you buy?

  • Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd gen) if you sideload anything, use Kodi or a full-featured Plex, want Dolby Vision, or simply do not want to check every app.
  • Fire TV Cube if the TV is on all day, in a home office or a shop, or you have Ethernet near it. It is the most powerful Fire TV device Amazon sells, on Fire OS.
  • A Vega stick (the 3rd gen 4K, or a 4K Select on clearance) if the apps you use are on it for that exact model (MarketCast is), and you want the newest stick or the lower price.
  • Fire TV Stick HD (2026) only for a 1080p TV, like a small bedroom or kitchen set, with the same app check first.
  • A Google TV device if you want Android apps for the long haul: every new Amazon stick will run Vega, while the Google TV Streamer and Walmart's onn 4K boxes keep the full Google Play catalog. We compared them in which streaming stick is actually fast.

How to tell if your Fire TV runs Vega OS

Go to Settings, then My Fire TV, then About. A Vega device lists its software version as "OS" followed by a number; a Fire OS device says Fire OS. A stick you already own keeps the system it shipped with, because Amazon is not converting existing devices to Vega. Neither stick here is about to be abandoned: Amazon's published security update schedule runs through at least December 31, 2030 for both the 4K Select and the 4K Max (2nd gen).

Put the stock market on your new stick

Whichever stick you pick, here is one useful thing to leave on it: MarketCast's Stream: your stocks, the major indexes, the day's movers and headlines cycling full screen on your TV, with a ticker tape along the bottom. You turn it on and leave it on. MarketCast works on every Fire TV, so it is a free download on any Fire TV, plus Google TV, Android TV and Apple TV. The free version shows delayed prices and is supported by commercials and sponsors; Premium is the real-time data package. Our supported devices page lists every model.
