Apple TV 4K is the best streaming box we build for, and for a lot of people it is still not worth the money. Both things are true. We make MarketCast, a stock market app for Fire TV, Google TV and Apple TV, so we live with the same app on all three every week. But in October 2026 Apple replaced its 2022 model with a new one that sells for $299, and at that price the honest answer depends on who you are. Here is how we would decide.
What you get for $299: the 2026 Apple TV 4K
Apple announced the Apple TV 4K (4th generation) on October 13, 2026. Pre-orders are open and it ships November 13. According to Apple's spec sheet, there is now one version instead of two:
- Chip: A19. Apple claims up to 50 percent faster CPU and up to 2x faster GPU performance than the previous generation.
- Storage: 128GB, the only option.
- Networking: Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi 7, and Thread, so it can act as a home hub for HomeKit and Matter accessories.
- Video: 4K at up to 60 frames per second, with Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG, and AV1 decoding. HDMI 2.1 port.
- New: three far-field microphones, so you can talk to Siri without the remote, and Siri AI, which Apple labels a beta in tvOS 27.2, English only, with usage limits.
- In the box: the Apple TV, a Siri Remote (4th generation), a power cord and documentation. No HDMI cable, and no USB-C cable for charging the remote. Budget for an HDMI cable if you do not have a spare.
The 2022 model (3rd generation) came in two versions, and the difference mattered: the cheaper Wi-Fi model had 64GB and no Ethernet or Thread, while the Wi-Fi + Ethernet model had 128GB and both, per Apple's tech specs. Apple no longer sells it, but if you find one new elsewhere, it still feels quick and gets tvOS 27. Pick the Ethernet version if you want Thread smart home gear.
Is Apple TV 4K faster than Fire TV and Google TV?
Yes, and from where we sit it is not close. Apple TV 4K is the smoothest platform we build for. Scrolling, transitions and charts behave the same on every Apple TV 4K we test.
Part of that is raw power, but most of it is that Apple makes a handful of boxes and they are all good. The Fire TV family alone spans sticks with 1 GB of memory (the 2nd and 3rd gen Fire TV Stick, the Stick Lite), 1.5 GB (the 2018 Fire TV Stick 4K) and 2 GB (the Fire TV Stick 4K Max, the 2nd gen 4K, the Fire TV Cube). Memory matters more than the 4K label on the box. On the 2018 Fire TV Stick 4K, a market screen left on overnight could run out of memory, and we had to shrink image caches and QR codes to keep it alive. The Google TV Streamer is fast, but cheap white-label Google TV sets with weak chips stutter in search and sign-in screens. Apple TV has never made us have that conversation.

Does Apple TV have ads on the home screen?
No third-party banner ads, which is the quality-of-life difference people notice first. Fire TV's home screen has autoplaying video promotions in its top carousel, and Amazon has experimented with full-screen video at startup. Google TV has sponsored content in its top carousel and sponsored rows further down.
Apple TV's home screen is a grid of your apps. Apple does promote its own things: the top of the screen can show shows from its TV app, and the $299 box comes with three months of Apple's Apple TV subscription, then $14.99 a month. (Yes, the box, the app and the service are all called Apple TV now. We do not love it either.)
Is Apple TV better for privacy?
Somewhat, in one specific and useful way. Since tvOS 14.5, any app that wants to track you across other companies' apps and websites has to ask first through Apple's App Tracking Transparency prompt. If you say no, the app gets an advertising identifier of all zeros. From the developer side, ad networks on Apple TV know far less about the viewer than elsewhere. You can review which apps asked in Settings, General, Privacy & Security, Tracking.
Streaming services still know what you watch on their own service. But a box that does not build an ad profile of your living room is a fair reason to pay more.
How long does an Apple TV last?
This is the argument that makes the price easier to swallow. Apple supports its TV boxes for a long time. The Apple TV HD from 2015 and the first Apple TV 4K from 2017 both received tvOS 26, and Apple even shipped a tvOS 26 update that adds support for the newest Siri Remote on both. tvOS 27, released September 14, 2026, requires the Apple TV 4K (2nd generation, 2021) or later. So a 2015 box got about a decade of major updates.
Compare that with the original 2014 Fire TV Stick, which has been stuck on Fire OS 5 (Android 5.1) for years. Amazon has also changed direction: its newest sticks, starting with the Fire TV Stick 4K Select and a 2026 Fire TV Stick HD, run Vega OS instead of Android-based Fire OS, Android apps do not run on them, and existing Fire OS devices are not being upgraded to Vega. We explain what that means in Fire TV Vega OS, explained by app developers.
Spread across eight years, $299 looks smaller. Spread across a guest room TV used twice a year, it does not.
Who should buy a cheaper stick instead
Plenty of people. We would point you elsewhere if:
- It is for a spare TV. A garage or bedroom TV running one or two apps does not need an A19. The Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd gen) or the Google TV Streamer will do the job for half the money or less, and Walmart's Onn 4K Google TV box for less again. If you are setting up an old TV as a dedicated screen, our guide to turning an old TV into a market screen covers the cheap options.
- You live in Amazon's or Google's world. If your house runs on Alexa or Google Assistant and nobody owns an iPhone, many of Apple TV's best tricks (AirPlay, iPhone as a keyboard, Find My for the remote, FaceTime through your iPhone) do little for you.
- You sideload apps. Apple TV only installs from the App Store. If you rely on Android apps outside the store, buy a Google TV device or a Fire OS stick, and note that the newest Vega OS sticks do not allow it either.
- You need several screens for an office. Five Apple TVs add up fast; a cheaper stick per TV usually makes more sense.
One tip if you shop Amazon: the newest sticks run Vega OS rather than Fire OS, so check that the apps you use are available for that model. MarketCast works on every Fire TV.
Who Apple TV 4K is worth it for
- iPhone households. AirPlay, iPhone keyboard entry, and the iPhone's Control Center remote for when the Siri Remote has vanished into the couch. If yours has stopped working, see our Siri Remote fixes.
- Your main TV, used every day. Speed and no home screen ads pay off hourly.
- People who keep devices a long time. See the update history above.
- Apple Home users. With Thread and Matter support built in, it doubles as the hub that runs your home automations when you are out.
- Anyone who leaves an app running all day. A screen that stays on for eight hours finds every weakness a cheap device has. Apple TV has fewer of them.
Should you upgrade from a 2021 or 2022 Apple TV 4K?
Probably not yet. Apple says Siri AI also comes to the Apple TV 4K (2nd generation) and later, and both of those boxes get tvOS 27. What the 2026 model adds is the A19, hands-free microphones, Wi-Fi 7 and four-HomePod surround sound. If none of that is on your wish list, keep your box. Owners of a 2015 Apple TV HD or 2017 Apple TV 4K, which no longer get major updates, have a better case.
The thing we leave on ours
Since smoothness is the reason to buy one, here is the app that shows it off best, and yes, it is ours. MarketCast has a mode called the Stream: your stocks, the major indexes, the day's movers and headlines cycling full screen on your TV on their own, with a ticker tape along the bottom. You turn it on and leave it on. It is at its best on Apple TV, because an all-day, always-moving screen is exactly where a weak device starts to stutter by mid-afternoon and Apple's does not. People leave it on in a home office or kitchen during market hours instead of muted cable news.
Our verdict
If it is going on the TV you watch every night and you have an iPhone, Apple TV 4K is worth it, and it will likely still be getting updates long after a cheaper stick has been replaced. If it is for a spare TV, a single app or a tight budget, buy a Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd gen) or a Google TV device and do not look back. Apple's is just the one we would put on our own main TV.
Whichever you choose, MarketCast is a free download on Apple TV, Fire TV and Google TV. Put on the Stream, your stocks and the market full screen, and your TV becomes a market screen. The free version shows delayed prices and is supported by commercials and sponsors; Premium is the real-time data package, with real-time prices, crypto around the clock and no commercials.
